Students are one of the crucial resources that one day will drive the economy of the industrial world. Therefore, it is very important for students to develop problem-solving skills and be able to think critically, rationally, and creatively. As chemical engineers, we are required to have an understanding of current issues in the industrial world, especially the oil and gas industry. This understanding is expected to be used to solve numerous problems regarding environmental, energy, natural resources, etc. One way for students to develop knowledge about issues in the industrial world is by participating in competitions. AIChE ITS SC certainly supports this and aims to facilitate competition participants by providing a training platform in the form of mentoring.
From 20 to 28 November 2021, AIChE ITS SC’s Professional Development department held a series of events with the purpose of mentoring students who plan to compete in PGD’s UI Petronation and I-CAST competitions. The first and second events were in the form of mini webinars which aimed to provide participants with knowledge about petroleum and bioenergy with Mr. Chandra Kurniawan and Mr. Dimas Eko Prasetyo as the speakers. The last event was a one-on-one mentoring session with 3 experienced lecturers from the ITS Chemical Engineering Department.
Our first webinar focused on introducing petroleum, with topics ranging from the history of petroleum in Indonesia, exploration and production, drilling, and trivia about the petroleum industry. Our second webinar focused on introducing bioenergy, with topics ranging from the current state of bioenergy, biomass, biogas generation, and process technology. Our last event consisted of a personal mentoring session with mentors assigned to each participating team to discuss their ideas on mitigating food loss and waste within the Indonesian fresh produce distribution network.
