On September 5th, 2020, AIChE ITS Student Chapter’s External Affairs Department organized an industrial-oriented discussion webinar with Mr. Wahju Ardianto, BASF’s ASEAN Technical Sales Manager as our speaker. Mr. Wahju Ardianto has a background in chemical engineering. But as a Technical Sales Manager, Mr. Wahju Ardianto is experienced in other aspects of the industry, such as economics, marketing strategy, and product development strategy. Which is why we chose to hold the event “Creativity in Professional Engineering” to broaden the view of people today that there’s more than just engineering skills that you can master to be well versed in the industry


The discussion was held online with our main topic about “Creativity in Professional Engineering“.
It was attended by 80 participants from universities all across Indonesia. The main topic discussed in this event was engineering Creativity value Chain, BASF Strategy part, and challenge.


Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being (Rollo May, The Courage to Create). Creativity alone is not enough.
Creativity is not just about thinking how to create something, because creativity alone is not enough. Some other things are needed to complement one’s creativity to make an idea work, such as

Some other things are needed to complement one’s creativity to make an idea work, such as skills, teamwork, competitiveness, concept, etc. To make something out of an idea, you need other specific skills, otherwise, it will not happen.

Engineering creativity is the creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, manufacturing processes, to utilize them individually or in combination; Or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; All in respect to its intended function, the economics of operation, and safety to life and properties


If we talk about the engineering value chain, the most important thing is the idea which starts from by doing research and development by the research engineering. The idea is implemented in the capital project stage by the project engineers and continuously being maintained by the maintenance engineer, in order to ensure the availability of the production and infrastructure facilities and develop a costumer-specific solution to optimize operation. finally, the idea is in the operations stage to ensure the production and further development of the plant. 

The BASF Corporation has strategies that we can learn from. They are related to the customer or customer Orientation which the customer is placed at the center of their decision-making process and everything they do. They position themselves as a solution-oriented system provider. They work closely with their partners to develop customer solutions that are both profitable and sustainable.
