Wednesday, February 20th 2019, AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) ITS SC, a non-profit organization based on Chemical Engineering, conducted a Plant Visit, an annual event to broaden industrial knowledge by directly visiting plants and encourage students to gain interest toward practical application of the engineering studies. This year, AIChE visited two of the major plants in East Java, Petrokimia Gresik Ltd. and Energi Nusantara Perkasa Gresik Ltd. Plant Visit was being participated by students from different majors and universities, such as Chemical Engineering from ITS and Refinery Engineering from Energy and Mineral Polytechnic Akamigas.
The first stop of Plant Visit was Petrokimia Gresik Ltd., which was located in three sub-districts: Manyar, Gresik, and Kebomas. Petrokmia Gresik Ltd. is a major petrochemical industry in East Java, a producer of fertilizers and non-fertilizers products for agriculture. Participants were welcomed by Luhung Nalarwangi as Public Relations of Petrokimia Gresik. Afterwards, company profile was presented by Mr. Nurhadi as staff of Community and Institution Relation, Public Relations Department of Petrokimia Gresik, which showed brief history, achievement, and CSR programs of Petrokimia Gresik Ltd., followed by presentation of production process by Mr. Arief Setiawan, staff of Process and Energy Control Department, Petrokimia Gresik. Mr. Arief Setiawan stated that Petrokimia Gresik has been moving forward by producing liquid CO2 and dry ice from its industrial waste. Furthermore, participants were escorted on a plant tour, on which they could see the enormous plants and its harbour.
The second stop was Energi Nusantara Perkasa ltd., formerly known as Media Karya Sentosa ltd., which located not far from the first stop. Energi Nusantara Perkasa ltd. is a gas processing company which supplies Pembangkit Jawa Bali Ltd. Participants were welcomed by Mrs. Indri as Public Relations of ENP and given presentations by Mr. Pribadi and Mr. SUjito about company profile and general production processes, such as fractination, control, and storage system. In addition, participants were guided to a close-up plant tour that allowed them to see the tools and equipment used in gas processing plant. Participants were allowed to ask questions to operators regarding the plant, making them more excited to work on field.
To conclude, AIChE ITS SC would like to express our deepest gratitude to Chemical Engineering Department for supporting and ensuring Plant Visit as an effective way to introduce work environment that expected by engineers. What Plant Visit had taught complimented Field Trip lecture – a curriculum mandatory to all junior (third) year students – in terms of knowledge and experience. Therefore, an event students must not miss!
